Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what new facilities are to be provided before 1973 for autistic children and psychiatric adolescent inpatients; and whether he will make a statement in relation to the facilities currently available in the area of the Manchester Regional Hospital Board.

Mr. Alison

Autistic children are usually treated with other mentally disordered children and there are no plans to provide new hospital units specifically for them. There are provisional plans for eight additional special units for mentally ill adolescents to be provided before 1973, with between 170 and 180 beds.

With regard to existing facilities in the Manchester Region, I have nothing to add to my right hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Member on 8th March.—[Vol. 813, c. 37–8.]
