HL Deb 05 July 1971 vol 321 c792WA
LORD KENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of the cost to local and central Government in the United Kingdom of dealing with oil pollution around the coast in each of the five years ending May 31 has been recovered from those who spilled the oil or from their insurers.

LORD DRUMALBYN

The proportions of the known cost recovered in these years, expressed as percentages, are as follows:

1966/1967 45.5 per cent.
1967/1968 nil
1968/1969 nil
1969/1970 53.3 per cent.
1970/1971 nil
Claims have been made or are in preparation in respect of the total costs of all major incidents which occurred in the year ended May 31, 1971. The total claims amount to some £500,000, but it is too early to say what proportion may be recovered.
