HC Deb 08 February 1971 vol 811 cc13-4W
81. Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many prosecutions there have been under the Trade Descriptions Act against tour operators and travel agents; if he will consider introducing further legislation on misleading information in brochures; and if he will make a statement on the operation of the Act in relation to tour operators and travel agents.

Sir J. Eden

Local weights and measure authorities have reported 20 prosecutions of tour operators and travel agents during the past two years: 14 of these were successful. The Act prohibits deliberately or recklessly false statements about various aspects of services, accommodation or facilities in terms which adequately cover the types of misrepresentation likely to mislead the holiday maker.
