HC Deb 08 February 1971 vol 811 c74W
Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much money has been spent on the Prison Service following the recommendations of the Mountbatten Report.

Mr. Carlisle

The following table shows the expenditure on the prison service in England and Wales in the financial years 1967–68–1970–71. It is not possible to say what proportion of this expenditure was directly attributable to the implementation of the recommendations of the Mountbatten Report.

£m.
1967–68 32.4
1968–69 39.1
1969–70 45.7
1970–71 54.4 (estimated out-turn)
These figures include capital expenditure on prison building.
