§ Mr. Sproatasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is taking action to encourage the development of family planning services.
§ Mr. Gordon CampbellWider statutory powers to provide family planning services became available to Scottish local health authorities on 1st September, 1970. In a circular issued in August I invited them to consider arrangements for this purpose in their area, and gave them my formal approval to such arrangements, including a domiciliary service where necessary. Authorities may provide a comprehensive service themselves or through a voluntary organisation acting as their agent. Allowance has been made for development in this sphere in the course of the recent rate support grant negotiations, the results of which I hope to lay before the House shortly.
My Department's Health Education Unit will shortly be able to provide on request factual information on methods of family planning and on the available sources of advice and assistance in each area.
