§ Mr. James Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the number and type of job opportunities he expects will become available to juveniles and adults in the Hull area as a consequence of Government action before the winter of 1971.
§ Mr. BryanSince the numbers and type of job opportunities which will arise in any area by a given date depend upon various unforeseeable factors, for example decisions by individual employers, I regret that I am unable to make the detailed estimate for which the hon. Member has asked. However, I expect Hull will benefit from the extensive measures we have taken both to stimulate the national economy and to encourage industrial growth in the development and intermediate areas.
396Wwomen, boys and girls, respectively, are included in each total.
§ Mr. James Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of school leavers presently without their first job in the Hull area from July, 1970 to the latest available date; and how this compares with the national average.
§ Mr. BryanThe numbers of boys and girls registered as unemployed, and the numbers of these who were school leavers registered for first employment, are counted on a selected day in each month. The following table shows the number of school leavers registered at Hull County Borough careers office and in Great Britain at each of the counts made from July, 1970, to July, 1971:
SCHOOL LEAVERS REGISTERED AS WHOLLY UNEMPLOYED Date Hull Great Britain 1970: July 9 9,063 August 672 36,322 September 250 20,696 October 82 9,933 November 34 5,359 December 30 3,821 1971: January 35 5,508 February 32 4,501 March 29 3,419 April 361 7,598 May 70 6,524 June 25 4,917 July 39 14,815 The statistics do not indicate how many of the school leavers at present registered as unemployed have been on the registers since July, 1970.
