Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his estimate of the number of households living in council houses in England and Wales which bring in per week more than, respectively, £20, £30, £40, £50, £75, £100.

Mr. Amery

The estimated numbers of households in council houses in England and Wales with incomes in 1968 in excess of these levels are given in the table below:

The percentages are derived from the Family Expenditure Survey, and are subject to sampling errors. The numbers of households are derived from applying these percentages to the estimated total number of 4½ million households.

The estimated average income of households in council houses in England and Wales in 1968 was £1,420. This estimate is derived from the Family Expenditure Survey, and is subject to sampling error.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated average annual income of council house tenants in England and Wales, at the latest available date.

The estimated average income of the heads of households in council houses in England and Wales in 1968 was £950. This estimate is derived from the Family Expenditure Survey, and is subject to sampling errors.
