I have continued to keep in close touch with events in Northern Ireland and my right hon. Friend the Minister of State paid a five-day visit to Northern Ireland at the beginning of September. I have met Northern Ireland Ministers on two occasions during the recess. Our talks, which were wide-ranging, were confidential.

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave today to my hon. Friend the Member for Belfast, East (Mr. McMaster) and the hon. Member for Brentford and Chiswick (Mr. Barnes).

Mr. Nigel Fisher
