HC Deb 28 October 1970 vol 805 c140W
49. Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of State for Defence how many troops he now estimates will remain in the Far East by the end of 1970; and how many are currently serving in Northern Ireland, respectively.

Mr. Ian Gilmour

The Regular British Army in the Far East at September, 1970, including Royal Marines and Gurkhas, totalled about 17,000. As the run-down proceeds this number will decrease progressively. Some 7,000 Regular soldiers and Royal Marines are at present serving in Northern Ireland.
