Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what studies he has made of the social problems arising from application for closures of passenger rail services; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what studies he has made of the costing of British Railways on proposed passenger rail closures; and if he will make a statement;

(3) what studies he has made on additional road accidents arising from further traffic on proposed closure of passenger rail services; and if he will make a statement;

(4) what studies he has made of changing population in the areas where British Railways are applying to close passenger services; and if he will make a statement.

All the factors to which the hon. Member draws attention are studied in relation to each individual proposal to withdraw a rail passenger service.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what studies he has made of the question of seeking powers to re-open closed passenger rail services; and if he will make a statement.
