HC Deb 27 October 1970 vol 805 cc102-3W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many new places will be provided in primary and secondary schools in the County of Cornwall between 1st January 1971 and 31st December 1971 as a result of the building of new schools.

Mr. van Straubenzee

800 and 900 respectively.

Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how she estimates that the rate of provision of additional primary and secondary school places through building, in the County of Cornwall, will compare with the national figure between 1st January, 1971 and 31st December, 1971.

Mr. van Straubenzee

Major building projects expected to start in 1970–71 and 1971–72 will provide 1,200 primary and 3,707 secondary school places in Cornwall at a cost of £2,120,000. Further places may be provided from the local education authority's minor works allocation of £418,000. I am satisfied that the authority's allocations represent a reasonable share of the total resources available in England and Wales, namely £171 million and £186 million in 1970–71 and 1971–72 respectively.
