Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable on what was the increase in assaults on police in the county of Staffordshire for the last available year.

Mr. Sharples

Comprehensive figures are not readily available. In the area of the Staffordshire County and Stoke-on-Trent Constabulary, there were 118 prosecutions in 1969, and 94 in 1968, under section 51(1) of the Police Act 1964 for assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable on how many men resigned from the police force in the county of Staffordshire in the last available year; and on what reasons were given for these resignations.
