HC Deb 27 November 1970 vol 807 cc237-8W
Mr. Eddie Griffiths

asked the Secretary of Stale for the Home Department in view of the overcrowding at Armley Prison, whether he will expand the remand centres in the South Yorkshire area.

Mr. Carlisle

The best method of relieving the overcrowding in Leeds and other local prisons is to provide more training prisons to which men can be transferred after sentence. Planning clearance has already been given for two new training prisons in the North, and my right hon. Friend hopes to include at least three others in the building programme on which we are now embarked.
