HC Deb 25 November 1970 vol 807 c123W
Mr. Jopling

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many street-lights have been erected on a stretch of the A1 road over several miles of relatively open countryside immediately to the north of the Doncaster by-pass; how much they cost to install; what is the approximate annual cost of operating them; what purpose it was intended that they should fulfil; and whether it is Her Majesty's Government's intention to provide similar provision on any other similar stretches of rural trunk roads.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

Some 275 street lights have been installed on a 3½ mile stretch of A1 between the junction of A638 and a point near to Barnsdale Bar service area. The total cost of installation is £42,000 and the annual operating costs are about £7,600. The prime purpose in lighting rural trunk roads is to reduce accidents and it is the intention to provide lighting where a substantial reduction in accidents can be achieved at an acceptable cost.
