Mr. Gregor Mackenzieasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made in the reduction of milk sales as a result of Her Majesty's Government's decisions to withdraw the subsidy on welfare milk and the abolition of school milk for children over 7 years of age in primary schools.
§ Mr. Gordon CampbellWhile I would expect some reduction during the course414W of 1971–72, it is too soon for it yet to be possible to make a forecast of the amount.
§ Mr. William Hamiltonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the present cost of the subsidy payable on cheap welfare milk in Scotland; what will be the total saving involved in its elimination; and what representations he has had on the matter from teachers and medical organisations.
§ Mr. Gordon Campbell£3.4 million a year. In addition, free welfare milk is supplied at present at a cost of £900,000. With the raising of the income level for entitlement to free milk, the cost of such supplies is expected to rise to about £1.3 million. The net annual saving will therefore be some £3 million.
