Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he is aware that, following the passage of legislation to compel farmers to fit cabs to tractors, the manufacturers of such tractors have increased the basic price of tractors considerably; and if he will therefore introduce legislation to control such prices.

As my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Employment said in the House on 23rd July, the Government believe that competition is the most effective means of safeguarding the consumer. In the circumstances legislation to control prices would not be justified.
