HC Deb 16 November 1970 vol 806 c339W
Mr. Merlyn Rees

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is aware that fluorine is at least ten times as toxic as sulphur dioxide, that its main source is from brickworks, and that it remains a danger to an area until physically removed; and if he will state what discussions are taking place on this problem between the various central and local Government agencies responsible for dealing with this danger.

Mr. Peter Walker

Fluoride emissions are a localised problem and deposits may have a harmful effect on animals which are allowed to eat affected herbage. I am advised that there is no long-term danger from deposits on soil and no hazard to public health. Members of the Alkali Inspectorate have discussions with local authority officers wherever problems arise.
