HC Deb 13 November 1970 vol 806 c295W
Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the percentage of the land of Carmarthenshire that is under forestry use, either Forestry Commission or private afforestations; what this represents in total acreage; and how this compares with the figures for Wales as a whole.

Mr. Peter Thomas

The woodland statistics for Carmarthenshire and for Wales as a whole, are as follows:

Area 000 acres Percentage of total land area per cent.
Carmarthenshire 60.6 10
Wales 543.7 10

Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what grants and other facilities are provided by his Department to private contractors engaged is afforestation.

Mr. Peter Thomas

None.

Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number of private contractors operating in Carmarthenshire on afforestation; whether he is satisfied that his Government has adequate supervision over their activities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Thomas

I understand that three concerns of this type are operating in Carmarthenshire. My Department does not supervise their activities and I see no need for powers to enable it to do so.
