HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 cc121-2W
Mr. McCartney

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current average weekly rent for local authority houses in the burghs of Clydebank, Bearsden, Milngavie, Kirkintilloch, Cumbernauld and the landward area of the county of Dunbarton.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The latest available information is contained in "Rents of Houses Owned by Public Authorities in Scotland, 1969" (Cmnd. 4294) published in March, 1970.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to limit the rate of increase in council house rents to no more than 15s. per week for any household in the coming year.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

Under the Rent (Control of Increases) Act, 1969, local authorities require my approval to any increase exceeding 10s. a week for any individual tenant in any period of 52 weeks. If a local authority applies for such approval its proposals will be considered on their merits. These provisions in the Act continue in force until 1st July, 1971. I will, however, consider the hon. Member's suggestion of a 15s. limit for the following six months.
