HC Deb 09 November 1970 vol 806 c28W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many public zoos or animal collections there are in Wales; how many private zoos or animal collections there are in Wales and if such collections have to be registered with his Department; if he is satisfied with the general observance of legal requirements in connection with the keeping of captive animals in Wales, in zoos, &c.; what part of his staff are responsible for ensuring adequate inspections; if checks for rabies, anthrax and other diseases are carried out; if adequate safety precautions are taken in each of the zoos to safeguard the public; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Carlisle

I have been asked to reply. There is no requirement for zoos or similar collections of animals to be registered or inspected and I have no information about their numbers in Wales. As regards safety precautions, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave on 5th November to a Question by the hon. Member for Loughborough (Mr. Cronin).—[Vol. 805, c. 1247.]
