HC Deb 09 November 1970 vol 806 cc44-5W
Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will give an approximate estimate of the loss of liquid milk sales resulting from Government proposals for the school and welfare schemes; and what steps he proposes to take to compensate farmers for these losses.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

The effect on liquid milk sales depends on the extent to which consumers decide to buy milk which is now made available cheaply or free. Farmers will suffer no financial loss in the current guarantee year 1970–71 from the changes in the Welfare Milk and School Milk Schemes. The trend in dairy farmers' incomes will be considered with the Farmers' Unions at the Annual Review before the Government determine the guaranteed price for milk for 1971–72.
