HC Deb 06 November 1970 vol 805 cc470-1W
Mr. Leadbitter

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total amount of effluent per year discharged in the bay at Hartlepool by Glaxo Chemicals Limited; and what other methods of discharge into the sea are practised by this firm or any other chemical firm from other parts of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Graham Page

The discharge to Hartlepool Bay is made under arrangements agreed between Hartlepool County Borough and the firm. This is a local agreement for the reception of effluent into the public sewers; its terms are not subject to my approval and I have no details of the quantity of effluent involved. As to the second part of the Question, industrial effluents including those of chemical firms where discharged into the sea are so discharged through the public sewerage system or through private outfalls or by dumping at sea.
