HC Deb 02 November 1970 vol 805 cc282-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what recent action he has taken, or intends taking, to stop the growing abuse of the claiming of social security benefits by persons who are not strictly entitled to receive them, and to prevent persons continuing to receive such payments when they are physically fit and able to work and keep themselves without state benefits.

Mr. Dean

Undoubtedly some claimants abuse social security benefits but many allegations of this do not stand up to investigation and we have no evidence to suggest a growing problem. Controls of supplementary allowances to people who are unemployed are under review by the Supplementary Benefits Commission and comprehensive revised instructions will be issued to local offices when this review is complete.

79. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, what action he has now taken, or intends taking, to stop the abuse of the social security system on the part of a resident in Stratford, London E.15, details of which have been supplied to him by the hon. Member for West Ham, North; and whether he will now discontinue unemployment payment to this man, in view of his ability to perform work which is readily available for him but which he refuses to accept.

Mr. Dean

According to our records the man in question started work seven weeks ago and has not claimed benefit since.
