HC Deb 02 November 1970 vol 805 c276W
Mr. Nicholas Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what facilities are provided for the management training of those involved in hospital administration.

Mr. Alison

Management training courses for hospital administrators in England and Wales are provided as part of a co-ordinated programme of management development recommended by the National Staff Committee. I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of the Committee's detailed advice on this subject.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what qualifications in management techniques are required for those appointed to senior administrative positions in hospitals; and what proportion of such appointments are held by those without any professional qualifications except in medicine.

Mr. Alison

Particular qualifications are not specified but considerable weight is attached to the possession of an appropriate professional qualification when senior appointments in hospital administration are being made. I understand from the National Staff Committee that some 9 per cent. of chief officers (secretaries and treasurers) in the hospital service in England and Wales do not hold professional qualifications.
