asked the Minister of Transport what has been the total capital expenditure to date on the installation of facilities for the testing and plating of heavy goods vehicles; what has been the total gross cost of providing testing and plating services and the revenue from such services, respectively, in each of the last three years, and the estimates for the current year.

Mr. Bob Brown:

The provisional total capital expenditure to 31st March, 1970, including capitalised interest, is £8.35 millions.

Compulsory testing and plating of heavy goods vehicles was introduced on the 1st October, 1968, and the estimated costs of providing the service, including capital amortisation where applicable, for the years 1968–69 and 1969–70 are £1.2 millions and £3.45 millions respectively, making a total of £4.65 millions.

Revenue received during the years 1968–69 and 1969–70 was £0.6 millions and £2.45 millions respectively, making a total up to 31st March, 1970 of £3.06 millions.

The estimates for 1970–71 are, expenditure, including capital amortisation, £4.5 millions, Revenue £3.0 millions.
