HC Deb 28 May 1970 vol 801 cc580-1W
Sir D. Renton

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that an express bus service taking 30 minutes between St. Ives and Cambridge, the introduction of which is a condition of his consent to withdrawal of railway passenger services between these two places, cannot be safely operated owing to congestion at the 600-year-old bridge at St. Ives, and on the way to Cambridge bus station; and whether he will therefore postpone the withdrawal.

Mr. Mulley:

No. The timing of the withdrawal of the railway passenger service is a matter for the British Railways Board, subject only to compliance with the conditions attached to my consent to that withdrawal. The Traffic Commissioners have now granted the necessary licence for the express bus service, and I therefore understand that they are satisfied it can be safely operated.
