HC Deb 28 May 1970 vol 801 c536W
Mr. William Price

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what further action he proposes to take to meet the increasing demand for sport and recreational facilities throughout the country.

Mr. Greenwood:

The Government have decided to make more capital available this year to allow local authorities to provide sport and recreational facilities where the need is most urgent.

Permission will be given for further new schemes to be started in development areas where there is a particular need to improve the local environment. Opportunity will also be given for a start to be made on a number of additional dual-use schemes in conjunction with the current school-building programme where the sport and recreational facilities will be fully available for use by both the school children and the general public.

It is also hoped to allow for the replacement of facilities in one or two areas where the existing facilities are outworn and have reached the end of their useful lives, and to provide for recreational open space areas in new towns and on new housing estates.
