asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of school leavers entered university and other full-time further education, respectively, in each year from 1960 to 1969, inclusive; and what estimate he has made for 1970.

Mr. Edward Short:

The percentages of leavers from schools in England and Wales who intended to enter university or other full-time further education are given in the following table:

1960–61 3.9 10.2 612.71
1961–62 3.3 9.9 726.46
1962–63 3.6 10.8 685.84

1967–68 6.1 13.9 604.01
1968–69 6.0 14.8 614.90

Notes

  1. 1. Figures exclude leavers from unrecognised independent schools and special schools.
  2. 2. Figures for the former colleges of advanced technology are included in the university column from 1961–62 onwards. For 1960.61 they are included in other full-time further education and cannot be separated.
  3. 3. The destination percentages throughout are based on ten per cent. sample survey of all leavers conducted annually.
  4. 4. No estimate is available for 1970.

Mr. Christopher Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the proportion of school leavers entering full-time higher education in 1960 and 1969.

Mr. Edward Short:

The percentages of leavers from schools in England and Wales in the academic years 1960–61 and 1968–69 who intended to enter all types of full-time further and higher education were 14.1 and 20.8 respectively.

NOTE: Figures cover universities, colleges of education and all full-time courses at further education establishments. They are based on a 10 per cent. sample survey of all leavers.
