Mr. Costain

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many immigration adjudicators have been appointed; what is the total cost; and when the first appeals are to be heard.

Mr. Merlyn Rees:

My right hon. Friend has appointed 20 full-time adjudicator, including the chief adjudicator, and 67 part-time adjudicators at a total cost of about £18,000.

Entry certificate appeals pending under the present extra-statutory arrangements have been dealt with by full-time adjudicators since April, when they complete which attracts exchequer grant at the rate of 75 per cent.—on the following projects:

their induction course. The functions of the adjudicators will be considerably extended when the first stage of the statutory appeal system comes into operation on 1st July.
