Mr. Judd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement on training facilities in race relations for all police recruits, particularly those in areas with multiracial communities.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

Every recruit receives instruction in community relations as part of his basic training, and he commonly receives additional instruction in his own force. Particular attention is given to the subject by the police forces that serve multi-racial communities. My right hon. Friend is setting up a working party to review existing arrangements.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will obtain reports from chief constables and publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details of the numbers of police personnel in areas with multi-racial communities working exclusively on race relations and details of the training with which they have been provided.

The following table has been compiled from information sent to the Home Office towards the end of 1969. A special course has been held each year at Manchester University for the last four years for officers engaged on this work.
