HC Deb 15 May 1970 vol 801 cc407-8W
Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

asked the Lord President of the Council whether he will make a statement about a new system of traffic control in Parliament Square.

Mr. Peart:

Yes. The Services Committee has agreed to a request by the Commissioner of Police for an experiment this summer in the use of traffic lights in Parliament Square, even when the House is sitting. It will entail the alteration of the traffic island at the East End of George Street and the installation of new filtering lights from George Street, so that Members' cars may more easily reach New Palace Yard from that direction. Apart from the saving in police manpower, it is hoped that the improvement in traffic flow, which the police expect to result, will overcome the difficulties which Members have recently experienced in reaching the House.
