Mr. John Lee

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many representations he has received about the disparate valuation for rating purposes of flats as compared with houses of comparable room space and amenities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell:

About 50 in the last four years. Both flats and houses are assessed on the basis of the rent they would be expected to command if let on the open market. Differences in rateable values for otherwise comparable properties therefore reflect differences in rental values.
