Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total number of civil servants employed by Departments comparable to his existing Department in 1964, and the annual cost; and what were the figures for his Department on 31st December, 1968, and the relevant figures on 30th April, 1970.

Mr. Ennals:

The industrial and non-industrial staff employed in this Department or in its predecessors on the relevant dates were as follows:

  • 1st April, 1964–56,978 (including 112 industrials).
  • 1st April, 1965–58,631 (including 106 industrials).
  • 31st December, 1968–69,579 (including 181 industrials).
  • 1st April, 1970–70,338 (including 177 industrials).

The figure for 1st April, 1970, is the most recent available.
