HC Deb 15 May 1970 vol 801 c364W
Mr. Burden

asked the Prime Minister what was the total number and cost of civil servants employed by all Government Departments and the cost on 31st March, 1970.

The Prime Minister:

There were 493,000 non-industrial and 207,850 industrial staff in post on 1st April, 1970. The salaries and related costs in 1969–70 on the basis of the annual Estimates were £1,031 million. The non-industrial figure is to be compared with the ceiling of 496.500 for 1st April, 1970, which I originally announced on 26th February, 1969.
