Mr. Bessell

asked Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to enable the Treasury to claim funds in the Bank of England which remain unclaimed for more than 50 years.

(1) A negligible amount of expenditure by local authorities is excluded.
(2) These figures include selective employment tax additional payments and regional employment premiums amounting in total to £41 million in 1966–67, £165 million in 1967–68 and £156 million in 1968–69.
(3) These figures include investment grants of £301 million in 1967-68 and £432 million in 1968-69. Investment grants replaced the previous system of investment allowances, which, being an offset to tax, are not included in the Table.
