asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of special constables now serving in England and Wales; how this compares with the 12 months previously; and what steps are now being taken to enlist further special constables.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

On 31st December, 1969 the strength in England and Wales was 34,331. On 31st December, 1968 it was 37,230. As regards recruitment. I would refer the right hon. and learned Member to the reply given to his Question on 20th November, 1969.—[Vol. 791, c. 343–4.]
