44. Mr. Deedes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the prison population at 1st April, 1970; and if he will give the corresponding figures for 1969 and 1968.

Mr. Callaghan:

The population of prison service establishments in England and Wales on 31st March, 1970 was 38,329. The corresponding figures for 1969 and 1968 were 33,832 and 32,507.

Mr. Albert Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current prison population in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Callaghan:

39,254 in England and Wales.
