§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will reconcile the figure of £ 2,474 million for public expenditure on education in 1970–71 given in Table 2 of Command Paper No. 3936 of February, 1969, with 302W the figure of £ 2,381 million given in Table 1.4 in Command Paper No. 4234 of December, 1969.
§ Mr. Edward Short:The figure of £ 2,474 million (unlike the £ 2,381 million and all other Command 4234 figures) includes £ 106 million for imputed rent. But it excludes £ 18 million attributable to higher rates of selective employment tax paid by local authorities following the 1969 Budget. The combined effect of these two changes is a figure of £ 2,386 million. The remaining difference of £ 5 million is the net result of a number of minor changes, some up and some down, made to the forecasts in the interval between the two documents.
