Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will state, for the longest convenient period of time, the number of persons who received suspended prison sentences; and in how many of these cases a subsequent offence or offences took place, and with what results.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

From 1st January 1968 to 31st December 1969 the provisional number of persons who received a suspended sentence of imprisonment was 64,269. Of these, 15,161 were convicted of an offence punishable with imprisonment committed during the operational period of the suspended sentence and were dealt with as follows:
