HC Deb 11 May 1970 vol 801 cc223-4W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Minister of Technology what is the total amount of factory space occupied by industrialists from the United States of America in Scotland and Lanarkshire, respectively; what amount is rented by the Industrial Estates Corporation; what efforts are being made to persuade the United States interests to purchase these factories; and what results have been achieved.

Mr. Carmichael:

The answer to the first part of the Question is not readily available. Of Ministry of Technology factory space provided under the Local Employment Acts and administered by the Scottish Industrial Estates Corporation, about 6.4 million square feet in Scotland are rented by American interests, and of this area 2.6 million square feet are in Lanarkshire. In addition, 2.8 million square feet have been sold in Scotland to American interests, and of this 0.4 million square feet are in Lanarkshire. We continue to draw the attention of industrialists to the advantages of their owning factories where all conditions are suitable.
