§ Mr. Brewisasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what study he has made of the use of trees as a means of reduction of air pollution, particularly of carbon dioxide.
§ Mr. Greenwood:The Department promotes the planting and preservation of trees in a number of ways, and carries out scientific studies, in conjunction with the Forestry Commission and local authorities, on the health of trees in certain special environments such as cities. This is done in the general interests of amenity rather than specifically to reduce air pollution. The question of the carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle as between animal life and human activity on the one hand, and vegetable life on the other, is being pursued by the appropriate research bodies and in the appropriate international organisations.
