HC Deb 05 May 1970 vol 801 cc96-7W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what were the estimated average percentage increases in earnings resulting from all wage and salary settlements involving more than 50,000 workers completed between January, 1969, and May, 1970, in the public sector and in the case of workers whose salaries are negotiated with the participation of representatives of Government Departments and in the private sector, respectively.

Mr. Harold Walker:

The average increases, weighted to take account of the number of workers affected in each case, are 8.1 per cent. for the private sector and 7.2 per cent. for the public sector. The public sector has been taken to mean the public services and the nationalised industries. The settlements are those affecting 50,000 or more workers, which were reached and notified to this Department during the period in question.
