asked the Minister of Transport if he will take steps to ensure that the maximum amount of shale from colliery spoil heaps is used as in-fill in the construction of the M18.

Mr. Bob Brown:

An inter-departmental working party has been appointed to consider all aspects of the use of mineral waste for roadworks. In the meantime, invitations to tender for the contracts in question will include a broadened specification allowing the use of various types of colliery shale.
