§ 87. Sir D. Rentonasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is aware that the amount of litter in public places has increased in recent years; whether he will consult local authorities, with a view to arrangements for such litter being collected and disposed of; whether he will require them to review their arrangements for the provision of litter baskets and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Greenwood:I agree that a deplorable amount of litter is left about. Propaganda about tidiness is given out in schools, and by the Keep Britain Tidy Group, which the Government help financially. Local authorities have adequate powers, and the results of consultations are to be found in the report of the Working Party on Refuse Collection. I should judge it wrong for central government to give local authorities orders on the subject.
