HC Deb 05 May 1970 vol 801 cc69-70W
56. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he is aware that many fit houses become derelict through being kept empty; and if he will conduct a pilot survey to ascertain the number of empty houses.

Mr. Freeson:

In the case of fit properties compulsorily bought by local authorities in areas of redevelopment, my right hon. Friend wrote to local authorities in London, the most affected area, in July, 1969 urging them to use such properties for temporary housing. Where there are large numbers of private properties standing empty for long periods, it is possible for local authorities to purchase them, or to assist housing associations to do so. This is particularly desirable in connection with improvements policy under the Housing Act, 1969. I do not think a pilot survey would reveal figures of national application.
