HC Deb 05 May 1970 vol 801 cc84-5W
Mr. Robert Cooke

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what plans he has for encouraging planning authorities to increase public awareness about the conservation areas which they have designated; and in particular whether he will encourage authorities to publish handbooks describing listed buildings, conservation areas and the authority's policy towards them.

Mr. Greenwood:

Publicity for individual conservation areas is primarily the responsibility of local planning authorities in collaboration with appropriate local voluntary bodies such as amenity societies. I know that a number of authorities already publish some booklets and the Ministry will continue to encourage their production. Advice on publicity for conservation areas will be considered for inclusion in a future circular.

The Department is collaborating with the Civic Trust on ways of increasing public awareness of conservation areas and of measures to enhance their character.
