§ 47 and 48. Mr. Hugh Fraserasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Com- 6W monwealth Affairs (1) if he will give the total of home-based staffs for all British Government overseas services in the years 1914, 1939, 1960 and 1970;
(2) if he will give the total of home-based civil servants of under-secretary rank and above employed by the British Government's overseas services in 1914, 1939, 1960 and 1970.
§ Mr. M. Foley:As far as can be ascertained from the Civil Estimates for the appropriate years, the numbers of home-based staff employed in British Government Overseas Services at the dates mentioned were as follows:
1914: 1,027 (of whom 50 were of Under-Secretary rank or above).
1939: 3,273 (of whom 148 were of Under-Secretary rank or above).
1960: 8,133 (of whom 128 were of Under-Secretary rank or above).
1970: 8,042 (of whom 162 are of Under-Secretary rank or above).
This total does not include any members of Home Civil Service Departments who may have been serving overseas at the given dates, except those who were at the time seconded to the Overseas Services. Accurate figures covering such officials at the dates concerned would be extremely difficult to establish.
