HC Deb 04 May 1970 vol 801 cc3-4W
12. Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further consideration is being given by the Ministers at the Council of Europe regarding their policy towards the present Greek Government.

Mr. George Thomson:

At their meeting in Strasbourg on 15th April, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, adopted a resolution urging the Greek Government to restore human rights and fundamental freedoms in Greece and agreeing to follow developments in this respect.

Sir G. Nabarro

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on Anglo-Greek relations.

Mr. George Thomson:

We attach importance to our relationship with the Greek Government, particularly in the fields of collective defence and trade. But I am bound to say that the restoration of the traditional warmth to this relationship will only be possible when democracy and human rights are restored in Greece.
