HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc497-8W
Mr. Dance

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the yield to the Exchequer in a full year of reducing the single person's and the married couple's tax allowance by £20 in each case, and the cost to the Exchequer of making a National Insurance allowance on the same basis as existed in 1964–65, but at a rate of £36 for an employed male, with equivalent rates to this for self-employed and non-employed males, employed, self-employed and non-employed females, and employed married woman or widows who elect not to pay the basic National Insurance contribution.

Mr. Taverne

The answer to the first part of the Question is £185 million on the basis of the 1969–70 Budget estimate. On the second part, there is insufficient information available to make the desired estimate.
