Mr. Mawby

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will estimate the cost to the Exchequer in a full year of reducing the duty on tobacco to the rates that prevailed in October, 1964;

(2) if he will estimate the cost to the Exchequer in a full year of reducing the duty on beer to the rates that prevailed in October, 1964;

(3) if he will estimate the cost to the Exchequer in a full year of reducing the duty on table wine to the rates that prevailed in October, 1964;

(5) if he will estimate the cost to the Exchequer in a full year of reducing the duty on spirits to the rates that prevailed in October, 1964.

Mr. Taverne

Ignoring the effects of consequential changes in the levels of consumption, the costs of the duty reductions indicated would be approximately as follows:

£ million per annum
All hydrocarbon oils 485
Tobacco 260
Beer 115
Imported light wine 15
Imported heavy wine 15
Spirits 100
